Running with Scissors

The other week we did an Art theme. For my class we studied a different artist each day. The first day we studied Henri Matisse. I showed the kids his artwork and the piece that we were going to try to replicate. I would tell the kids over and over that art is what THEY make of it. I did not want them to make the exact work that Matisse did. I wanted them to make it their own.

I started the project with scraps of different color construction paper. Each student was given a piece of white paper, scissors, and a glue stick.

They were instructed to cut different shapes out of multiple colors of paper. Then they were to glue it onto the white paper as they wished.

We then framed the paper with odd shaped orange strips, just like Matisse's work.

The final product was amazing. The kids were so proud of their work and the best part was seeing how they interpreted them.
